What is beach volleyball? How to play?
Beach volleyball is a popular sport that is played on sandy courts, usually on the beach or at dedicated beach volleyball facilities. It is a variation of indoor volleyball but is played outdoors on a smaller court with two players on each team instead of six. The game combines elements of traditional volleyball with some unique aspects due to the sandy surface and fewer players.
Here’s how to play beach volleyball:
Court Setup: The court measures 16 meters long and 8 meters wide. A net is placed in the center, with its top edge set at a height of 2.43 meters for men’s play and 2.24 meters for women’s play.
Teams: Each team consists of two players. Unlike indoor volleyball, there are no specialized positions, and both players need to be proficient in all aspects of the game, including serving, receiving, setting, and attacking.
Scoring: Beach volleyball uses rally scoring, meaning points are scored on every play, regardless of which team served the ball. The first team to reach 21 points (with a lead of at least two points) wins the set. Matches are typically played as the best of three sets.
Serve: The match begins with a serve. The server stands behind the back boundary line, tosses the ball, and strikes it over the net, aiming to land it in the opponent’s court.
Passing and Setting: After the serve, each team has up to three hits to get the ball over the net and into the opponent’s court. The first contact is usually a pass, followed by a set to position the ball for an attack.
Attack: The attacking player jumps and attempts to hit the ball into the opponent’s court with force and precision. Blockers from the opposing team will try to deflect or block the attack.
Blocking: Players at the net can attempt to block the opponent’s attack by reaching above the net with their hands.
Digging: When the opposing team attacks, players must try to “dig” the ball by passing a hard-driven ball with their forearms to keep the play going.
Rotation: There is no rotation in beach volleyball, meaning players maintain their positions throughout the match.
Women’s beach volleyball follows the same rules and format as men’s beach volleyball, but with the difference in net height as mentioned earlier. It has gained significant popularity worldwide, with many countries having strong women’s beach volleyball teams competing at various levels of international tournaments, including the Olympic Games.
Beach volleyball is an exciting and physically demanding sport, combining teamwork, skill, and strategy in a beautiful outdoor setting. It’s a fun activity for friends and families to enjoy on the beach, as well as a highly competitive sport played by professional athletes around the world.
